#iMissTheOldKanye: The Perfectly Imperfect Artist

mr-west“I miss the old Kanye, straight from the Go Kanye
Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye
I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye
The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye
I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye
I gotta say, at that time I’d like to meet Kanye”

These highly remembered lyrics are an interlude from Kanye’s recent body of work, The Life of Pablo. I find myself credible to talk about Mr.West because of the love I have developed for his music throughout the years. Mr. West is a rapper who always seems to be the topic of conversation. This comes as no surprise because his wife Kim Kardashian, was robbed in her hotel room this October in Paris. Following the robbery, Mr.West was hospitalized due to exhaustion and was released a month later from U.C.L.A Medical Center. The question raises whether Kanye is trying to put on a perfect act and has finally shown that he is not so Godly as he hoped everyone would perceive? Or is he in fact human and has raw emotions that he needs to deal with?

According to biography.com, The 39-year-old rapper was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8th, 1977. West was raised by his mother who divorced his father when he was three years old. Donda West, who was an English professor, made sure to instill the importance of education in her son’s mind. West graduated from Polaris High School and attended college for one year at the Chicago State University, where he studied art. His mother, who was highly disappointed when he dropped out, gave him one year to defend his outrageous decision to see what he would do as a career without a college degree. West moved to New York, where he became a highly paid producer for Sean Carter, also known as Jay-Z. West would eventually use everything he learned to drop his debut album, The College Dropout, which landed him a Grammy for Best Rap Album. Throughout his career, West would go on to release six more studio albums following his debut.

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind how creative Yeezus is and he has evidence to back it up. Yeezus has won over 21 Grammy’s and has eight nominations for the 59th annual show happening February of next year (2017). His latest album has been nominated for Best Rap Album.

Kanye has been through a lot in his life. His mother died in November 2007 due to complications during cosmetic surgery. West’s mother who was 58 years old at the time, was warned against having the surgery because of her tender age. She was announced deceased at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center. A spokesperson for the hospital told Access Hollywood, “Donda West was brought into the emergency room at Centinela. She was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. They tried to revive her and were unsuccessful.”

The influence of his mother in his life was evident before and after her death. Yeezus proved to the world within a two month range that he went from being an a**hole to someone with emotions, which is something he didn’t quite plan for. In September 2009, when Beyonce didn’t win Video of the Year at the VMA’s, Kanye West abruptly went on stage to tell Taylor Swift how much she didn’t deserve it. The world viewed him as an a**hole, but in Kanye’s eyes, he was standing up for one of his favorite artists.

There was a sudden change in reaction to Mr.West when he went on the Jay Leno show to catch up on life. It was shown how much Mr.West was caught off guard when Mr.Leno asked him a question about his mother. Leno asked, “What would your mom say if she was still alive?” in regards to Yeezus stealing the award from Taylor Swift. He broke down in tears and revealed to the world that maybe he does care about how he is viewed.

Dealing with death is not easy especially if it was someone whom you were extremely close to. It is irrelevant that his mother passed away nine years ago, as the coping of death differs from person to person. According to Mental Health America, coping with the loss of someone is extremely difficult. As it is stated on their site, “These feelings are normal and common reactions to loss. You may not be prepared for the intensity and duration of your emotions or how swiftly your moods may change. You may even begin to doubt the stability of your mental health.”

Kanye decided to randomly cancel his Saint Pablo tour late November and it was revealed that he was seeking medical help. The tour which has rounded up millions thus far, features a floating stage that made fans excited to interact with Yeezus. Fans had the opportunity to look up to him from the point of view of the stage. I too was a fan who was looking forward to this highly anticipated tour as I bought tickets for December 30th at the Barclays Center in New York. I was disappointed when I got a refund from TicketMaster informing me that Mr.West has cancelled the tour. Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment.

Along the tour Kanye West made a couple of announcements before being hospitalized. West made a stop in Seattle where he expressed that Jay-Z only used a phone call to find out how his longtime friend was doing which angered Kanye. He stopped his tour to say, “Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say ‘how you feelin?’ You wanna know how I’m feelin? Come by the house.”

In addition to tarnishing his reputation with Jay-Z, West made another announcement on his tour. According to vibe.com, the Chi-Town rapper said he was a fan of Donald Trump. He said he enjoyed his debate style, called him a “genius” and then said that if he voted this year, he would have voted for Trump. This comes as a shock as Mr.West is always one to defend his people and stand up in issues of racism and prejudices. In an interview he did with Zane Lowe talking about life, music, and his passions, he brought up how he feels the need to stand up against racism and remind everyone why he thinks highly of himself. West stated he doesn’t view himself as a “n*gga” but rather a God. Earlier this week, Mr.West visited the president-elect at the Trump Tower where he said, “I just wanted to take a picture with him.”

Overall, it does seem like some fans miss the “Old Kanye.” However, there is no old Kanye. This is who he was all along. Kanye is someone who is arrogant, sometimes ignorant, honest, brutal and most importantly real. He has been known to speak for how he feels in the moment and he is living in the moment. Kanye, continue making the world proud with your music. If the world stops listening to you, I’ll still have my headphones plugged in with your music. Kanye is an artist who has flaws but that doesn’t stop his creativity because he is perfectly imperfect. As Kanye said himself, “When you’re the absolute best you get hated on the most.”
